Fashion Inspired

One of my 8th graders, Laura B., (2009-2010) was really into fashion and drawing clothing. She did all her projects during the trimester as fashion related, but used many mediums.

She used the fiber center and some of her own ties to create a tie skirt. (Most of which she worked on at home.)

  • Title: “All Tied Together”
  • Medium: Fabric, Sewing utensils
  • I loved doing this project because I stuck with my challenging idea. My sewing skills got much better.

She used drawing center to draw many clothing ideas.

  • Title: “Summer heat”
  • Medium: Pencil, rubbing plates, colored pencil
  • Using the rubbing plates was fun and I could come up with ideas off the top of my head with this drawing.

She used paint center to create some fabric print samples.

Finally she brought all these ideas together in a design poster for a line of clothes. She used fabric scraps she found in our fiber center and added designs and prints to them in the paint center, she used the printmaking/ stamp and collage centers to enhance the background for her poster and she used drawing center to create her illustrations.

  • Title: “Bold Shimmer”
  • Medium: Stamps, markers, pencil, fabric, glitter, beads, feathers, colored pencil
  • This was the most fun project only because I had such great ideas and it turned out looking great.

Monochromatic Object Painting

5735

To prep this assignment, you will need bins of objects for each table. For management purposes it is best if each table has the same items, so that students do not wander to other tables looking for something. Have students lay an object one at a time on their paper and trace around the outside and any inner holes in the object. Each time they add another object it must OVERLAP a previous object. After the pages is filled, monochromatic paints are mixed and the objects are painted. After drying the painting I have the kids go over the outlines of the objects in a black marker.  (from http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/high/monochrom.htm)

Monochromatic Portrait Painting

5931

To prep this assignment, You will want to take digital pictures of your students and then adjust them in Adobe Photoshop Elements. I include this in my digital lessons and have all students do this assignment. Print them out in medium contrast black and white. Students will then use this image to paint their own face in a monochromatic scale. I will also allow them to use this assignment in their color section in addition to a color wheel if they want to do a different Value assignment. (from http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/high/monochrom.htm)

Suggested List of objects:

  • Scissors
  • Cookie cutters
  • Light switch and outlet covers
  • Empty plastic tape dispensers
  • Rulers, including the plastic triangle and fancy edge kinds.
  • Stencils
