Fashion Inspired

One of my 8th graders, Laura B., (2009-2010) was really into fashion and drawing clothing. She did all her projects during the trimester as fashion related, but used many mediums.

She used the fiber center and some of her own ties to create a tie skirt. (Most of which she worked on at home.)

  • Title: “All Tied Together”
  • Medium: Fabric, Sewing utensils
  • I loved doing this project because I stuck with my challenging idea. My sewing skills got much better.

She used drawing center to draw many clothing ideas.

  • Title: “Summer heat”
  • Medium: Pencil, rubbing plates, colored pencil
  • Using the rubbing plates was fun and I could come up with ideas off the top of my head with this drawing.

She used paint center to create some fabric print samples.

Finally she brought all these ideas together in a design poster for a line of clothes. She used fabric scraps she found in our fiber center and added designs and prints to them in the paint center, she used the printmaking/ stamp and collage centers to enhance the background for her poster and she used drawing center to create her illustrations.

  • Title: “Bold Shimmer”
  • Medium: Stamps, markers, pencil, fabric, glitter, beads, feathers, colored pencil
  • This was the most fun project only because I had such great ideas and it turned out looking great.

Rotoscoping!

Students (MS and HS) around the world collaborated to do this cool rotoscoping animation project… I keep trying to figure out how to add this assignment to my video class, but we barely get through the basics…

Art club and ATCs

This week in artclub I brought out my binder of ATCs that I have collected over the years along with a BAG of cards that were donated to me for trading. I explained a bit about trading cards, let them look through the card collection.

I had 17 kids this week and I run the club like TAB, open studio. We have 2+ hours so most of the kids do 2 or more centers within the time period. So a few went off to the sculpture, paint and computer centers but the bulk of the kids went to collage or drawing center and got to making cards.

I traded them one of my creations and 2 of the donated cards for 1 of their cards. I thought it was a good way to get their collections going. A couple traded with each other, a couple made special boxes that they decorated to keep their collection in and a few of the kids that went to other centers were eventually drawn over to make cards too as the excitment bubbled.

There ended up being a SERIOUS amount of clean-up as the collage center seemed to have erupted. But I now have some great newbie cards added to my collection and several kids that vowed to make some more at home and bring them to trade next week.

This Old House Assignment: (from A Survival Kit for the Elementary/Middle School Art Teacher) To prep this assignment, find numerous pictures of houses and other architecture, I used magazines. Copy them in medium contrast black and white.  The goal is to re-create the structure in pencil VALUE only, using shading techniques such as cross-hatching.
