Fashion Inspired

One of my 8th graders, Laura B., (2009-2010) was really into fashion and drawing clothing. She did all her projects during the trimester as fashion related, but used many mediums.

She used the fiber center and some of her own ties to create a tie skirt. (Most of which she worked on at home.)

  • Title: “All Tied Together”
  • Medium: Fabric, Sewing utensils
  • I loved doing this project because I stuck with my challenging idea. My sewing skills got much better.

She used drawing center to draw many clothing ideas.

  • Title: “Summer heat”
  • Medium: Pencil, rubbing plates, colored pencil
  • Using the rubbing plates was fun and I could come up with ideas off the top of my head with this drawing.

She used paint center to create some fabric print samples.

Finally she brought all these ideas together in a design poster for a line of clothes. She used fabric scraps she found in our fiber center and added designs and prints to them in the paint center, she used the printmaking/ stamp and collage centers to enhance the background for her poster and she used drawing center to create her illustrations.

  • Title: “Bold Shimmer”
  • Medium: Stamps, markers, pencil, fabric, glitter, beads, feathers, colored pencil
  • This was the most fun project only because I had such great ideas and it turned out looking great.

Door Movies by the 8th graders

The American Film Institute created a great student film curriculum that I have been using with my 8th grade digital video arts classes. In this assignment the kids had to shoot a film in a small group. the requirements were: one actor only, all filmed within 5 feet of the door. The actor was to walk up to the door, hear a frightening noise, react in fear, struggle to open the door, finally make it through the door and show relief that the strange noise was not in-fact dangerous. The first day, they shot the film without any storyboard or planning, then they watched the outcome, learned more about camera angles and storyboards and wrote a storyboard. Next, to experience the importance of storyboards they had to re-shoot using the storyboard from a different group. Finally, they re-filmed their own storyboard. For the editing part, all students had to edit their own version from any footage from the several group sessions. They had to edit out all camera audio and use only music and sound effects to tell the story and build the suspense.
